Back in the day it was just Internet Explorer (IE) and Netscape. Then Firefox and Opera came along. Before long the mobile world exploded, bringing with it the Blackberries, iPads, and Androids. And all sanity was lost.
As content producers (if you have a website, you are a content producer), this is a challenging time. How do you design for all these varied media of consumption? Tough question. No easy answers. What is clear is you cannot ignore the cornucopia of media and browsers. You cannot just code for IE even though it is the largest browser! What about the 4% of people who may visit your website via a mobile browser? That little two-page brochure website looks horrible on an iPad or Wii Browser. And your website takes an eternity to load on the fast Android browser.
The landscape has indeed shifted. Your approach to design and content distribution must change.
Silence Genti is the web community developer at mindyourmind. He is often heard uttering a few expletives and ranting about the very existence of IE6 in the office. Safe to say, if he was a policeman he would charge everyone who is still using IE6 with ‘gross hanging onto obsoletes and the past’.
